About the ArtistJulie Henry’s photographs and videos commonly contrast success and failure, competitors and their spectators, and performers and their audiences. In her two-channel immersive video installation Going Down (1999), Henry focuses on a fan-filled stadium. Using footage that was captured at the conclusion of a match in England, one video presents the ecstatic fans of the winning team, while the other shows a deflated group who were rooting for the loosing team. The installation taps the powerful emotions that vibrate through sporting arenas and other large-scale events, capturing the magnetic atmosphere that often arises in a crowd.

Henry completed a BA in Critical Fine Art Practice at the Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design, London (1998). Her work has since been included in exhibitions at the Botanischer Gardens & Museum, Berlin (2013); Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow (2013); Technical Museum, Vienna (2008); Brooklyn Institute of Contemporary Art (2006); Martin-Gropis-Bau, Berlin (2005); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (2005); and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (2004), in addition to solo shows held at the Garden Museum, London (2010); Gallery 33, Berlin (2008); Great Eastern Hotel, London (2006); Presentation Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (2005); and Anthony Wilkinson Gallery, London (2003, 2000), among others. Working alongside photographer Debbie Bragg since 2001 on projects that take a socio-anthropological approach to studying consumerism culture and the deterioration of the working class, their collaboration Henry/Bragg has also been prominently featured in numerous international exhibitions.
