About the ArtistErica Deeman’s Silhouettes series uses a muted color palette to emphasize the nuances and unique characteristics present in each woman’s individual profile. Using traditional portraiture to reference physiognomy- the pseudo-science that 17th-century doctors would employ to create correlations between people’s facial features and their intellect and abilities, Deeman’s large scale photographs seek to subvert the often racist implications of the pseudo-sciences, and instead celebrate the wide spectrum of identity and femininity found within the African Diaspora. Erica Deeman completed her Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, UK (2000) and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Academy of Art, San Francisco, CA (2014). She lives in Seattle, WA and works between here and the Bay Area.
