About the ArtistBorn in Washington, D.C., Connie Noyes completed a BA at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia (1976) and an MFA in photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1980). In her early work, Noyes used photographs as a jumping-off point, altering and augmenting the image with paint or other materials. She cites Robert Rauschenberg as an important influence, noting that a major retrospective of his work was touring museums in the United States during the years she was in graduate school. In the early 1990s, Noyes returned to school for psychology at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, receiving an MA in 1994, and for nine years, she worked as an art therapist. In 1998, she started making paintings, and three years later, she closed her therapy practice and began to pursue painting full time. In addition to the Museum of Contemporary Photography, her work is in collections such as the Ekstrom Library of Photographic Archives Special Collections in Louisville, Kentucky; Rhode Island School of Design; and the Greenville County Museum in South Carolina. She lives and works in Chicago.
