About the ArtistFrancis Bruguière was part of the Photo-Secessionist movement of the early 20th century, which was spearheaded by Alfred Stieglitz. Bruguière worked with abstraction by photographing his own cut-paper arrangements and experimenting with lighting techniques. His work was featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and is held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman Museum, the Getty Museum, and the International Center of Photography, among others. He photographed for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. The film Light Rhythms, produced by Oswell Blakeston in1930, was based on a series of Bruguière’s abstractions and was England’s first abstract film. Bruguière was also a painter, sculptor, and musician, and he dedicated the last years of his life to painting.
