About the ArtistSusan Carr photographs the interiors of American homes that have been occupied by the same person for at least forty years. In square black-and-white photographs, Carr neatly frames clusters of collectable figurines, sparse bedroom arrangments beneath busily patterned wallpaper, and other scenes that speak to the memorabilia accumulated over a lifetime. Some of these domestic settings are meticulously orchestrated by their inhabitants while others are more haphazard, but all reflect a range of personal and idiosyncratic choices, serving as portraits of the absent people. Carr earned her BA from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo (1985). Trained as a fine art photographer, Carr also had an active commercial practice, specializing in architectural photography.
