About the ArtistAshley Gilbertson's first project in Iraq (March – April, 2002) focused on a Kurdish enclave, and the second (January – May, 2003) followed the U.S. led invasion and occupation. He returned under assignment by _The New York Times to cover the war from November 2003 to November 2004, during which time he produced the 24 pictures now in the Museum of Contemporary Photography collection.
Ashley Gilbertson was born in Australia. His education in photojournalism was shaped by Emmanuel Santos in Melbourne and Masao Endo in Japan. Since 1998 his work has taken him to Indonesia, the Philippines, Kosovo, Papua New Guinea, China, Iraq, and Afganistan. He has been recognized for his work in Falluja with the Overseas Press Club's Roberta Capa Gold Medal, The New York Times' Publisher's Award, and as a finalist for the ICP Infinity award. His pictures have appeared in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News and have been exhibited by Australian Center for Photography in Witness: Study of Australian Photojournalism (2003) and by Museum of Contemporary Photography in War Fare (2006).
