Born and raised in Chicago, Roger Freeman completed a BA at the University of Wisconsin (1967) and went on to teach in the Chicago Public Schools for three years. During this period he enrolled in photography classes at Columbia College Chicago. Freeman is represented in the portfolio Project 2, which comprises photographs by the students and faculty of the Department of Photography in 1972. In 1974 Freeman entered graduate school at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago, where he earned an MS in photography. Since the late 1970s he has been a professor of photography at Alfred University, in Alfred, New York.
