BiographyTed Orland completed an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design at the University of Southern California (1963), and pursued a career in the field for many years, working for designer Charles Eames. After taking a workshop with Ansel Adams in 1966, he left design to pursue photography. Within a few years, Orland became Adams' full time assistant. He continued his studies, completing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. Early on, Orland used black-and-white film in his own work; in more recent years, he has experimented with hand-colored photographs and panoramic montages. Orland lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he has been a writer and educator, in addition to his activities as a photographer.
