McElroy, Lilly

American, b. 1979 Globe, AZ
BiographyLilly McElroy is a photographer and performance artist whose practice focuses on masculinized mythologies of the American West as it related to power, gender, and climate anxiety. McElroy’s upbringing in southern Arizona informs her ongoing projects in what she describes as “feminist interventions into the landscape.” She utilizes absurd, slightly humorous premises to make the viewer aware of her presence, whether she is the figurative subject in the work, or a consciously stated force in the physical alteration of the image. Gesture and movement are also central to McElroy’s work, represented in series such as I Throw Myself at Men (2006-2008), A woman runs through a pastoral setting (2014), and I Control the sun (2015-ongoing).

Lilly McElroy received a BFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006). She has been an artist-in-residence at the Charlotte Street Foundation, Kansas City; Fine Arts Work Center, Massachusetts; Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture; and various others. She has had solo exhibits at Figge Art Museum, Indiana; Thomas Robertello Gallery, Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson; and more.
