BiographyAlberto Ibáñez has an ongoing series on crossdressers and trans people from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The area of Juchitan, a city of the Isthms, is known for being queer-friendly. Coincidentally, it is also well known for the many positions of political and civil authority occupied by women. All the people in these photographs are taking part in celebrations called “velas.” The people are known as “maricas,” or by the aboriginal Zapotec word, “mushe.”
