Scheuttle, Marshall
Marshall Scheuttle’s ongoing series, Morning Star, features large format photographs taken in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, combining an individual narrative with a much larger story by drawing on notions of lawlessness, vice, and urban myth. The artist often looks to the spectral phenomenon of the desert sky and juxtaposes this with life in a volatile region seemingly destined for collapse. The series contains portraits, landscapes, and still lifes that contain jarring photographs of weaponry, police, and gang members and also quieter images and majestic landscapes. The series conflates an individual story with a tale of a city itself. Scheuttle’s work is held in the collections of the Burchfield Penny Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; CEPA Gallery, Buffalo, NY; and the State University of New York Art Museum, Albany, NY.
