Rondinone, UgoSwiss, b. 1964

New York-based Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone began his I don’t live here anymore series in 1995. Appropriating fashion advertisements, Rondinone digitally replaces each model’s face with his own, further heightening the artificiality of the original photographs. The androgynous physiques of the women modeling suggestively reinforce the ambiguity of his technical manipulations, resulting in a fusion of masculinity and femininity. Best known for his room-scale installations, Rondinone’s practice spans photography, sculpture, painting, sound and video, media with which he explores the porous boundaries between reality and fantasy. Rondinone has had solo exhibitions at museums around the world, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and Kunsthalle in Vienna, among others. In 2007, he represented Switzerland at the 52nd Venice Biennale.
