A veteran photographer and cinematographer since the 1960s, John Simmons’ images highlight mundane corners of everyday life, revealing the beauty of intimate moments, and exposing the more hidden details of Black culture. Simmons started in documentaries working with film director Carlton Moss who became his mentor in college; later in his career this collaboration led Simmons to filming and directing commercials and music videos with a spectrum of artists including Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg, and others. He has been a member of The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) since 2004 and has served as one of the ASC vice presidents.
