Lovell Williams, D'Angelo
D’Angelo Lovell Williams’ photograph, As Close, 2019, is part of a body of work titled Papa Don't Preach, which confronts and explores ideas about Black queer identity. In this series, the artist foregrounds bodies in a variety of poses to explore generational and present traumas in both public and private spaces, while simultaneously reclaiming agency from white iterations of Black queer narratives.
Williams completed their BFA in photography from Memphis College of Art, and an MFA in photography from Syracuse University. They have had solo exhibitions at Higher Pictures and Janice Guy galleries, New York. Williams earned a BFA in photography from Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee and a MFA in photography from Syracuse University (2018). Their work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Higher Pictures Generation, New York in 2017 and 2020.
