BiographyAna Teresa Barboza is a mixed-media textile artist who combines embroidery, knitting, and photography to create hybridized abstractions of nature. Her labor-intensive practice is an explorative celebration of the environment, sustainability, and ancestry. Barboza uses traditional Peruvian weaving techniques, working with natural fibers and plant dyes indigenous to each ecosystem she is rendering to maintain the connectivity between local communities and their materials. The artist extends the constructed framework of photography and invites viewers to consider fluctuating representations of an ever-shifting ecology. She states: “Nature is in a constant state of change, and so too are my artworks.”
Ana Teresa Barboza studied painting at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (1999-2004), then worked as a fashion and costume designer for a decade following. She was inspired to learn a new medium after discovering a box of naturally dyed yarn while organizing her late mother’s room, sparking her enduring interest tradition and memory. Barboza has had solo exhibitions at Nunu Fine Art, New York; Wu Gallery, Lima; Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires; Museum of Contemporary Art, Lima; among others.
