Gorman, Greg

American, b. 1949
BiographyLos Angeles-based photographer Greg Gorman is best known for his sensuous black-and-white nudes and his studio portraits of celebrities in a range of professions, including actors, musicians, and artists. The untitled photograph represented here, depicting a young man's head, is part of Gorman's twenty year study of the male body. Published as the book As I See It in 2000, the series focuses on young men who appear on the indefinite cusp between boyhood and full maturity, a point that in Gorman's view defines masculinity.

Greg Gorman was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended the University of Kansas where he majored in photojournalism (1969), and he completed an MFA in Cinematography at the University of Southern California (1972). Gorman has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, and his work is in the permanent collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; New Orleans Museum of Art; and Cafesjian Center for the Arts, Yerevan.
